St Mellitus College was saddened to hear of the recent death of Al McDonald at the age of 81. Al McDonald was the founder of the McDonald Agape Foundation, a philanthropic organisation with the aim of encouraging distinguished scholars for Christ and a great friend of St Mellitus College.

The McDonald Agape Foundation has supported a number of projects for St Mellitus College, most notably its series of fourteenMcDonald Lectures from 2015-17, which invited world-renowned theologians and scholars to reflect on the place of Christianity in the modern world, some of the questions it faces, and to imagine its possible futures; the three-year Generous Orthodoxy research project launched in 2018 to help bring theological and spiritual clarity to the term, and the McDonald Professor in Christian Theology, currently held by Rt Revd & Rt Hon Rowan Williams.

Bishop Graham Tomlin, President of St Mellitus College, writes:

“Al was a giant - a man of wisdom, generosity and kindness. He was such a warm and welcoming person, and had the gift of making other people feel better about themselves, rather than many powerful people who diminish others. AGAPE was a very fitting word to attach to his foundation.”

Please join the college in praying for Al’s wife, his children and the wider family, and all those at the foundation at this time.
