Revd Dr James Harding appointed Director of St Mellitus College, South West
James Harding

St Mellitus College is pleased to announce that Revd Dr James Harding has been appointed as the new Centre Director for St Mellitus College, South West.

St Mellitus College (SMC) was formed in 2007 with a spirit of partnership and has grown to become one of the largest theological training colleges in the UK, operating as a national training college with delivery centres across the country. In 2017 the Dioceses of Exeter and Truro entered a partnership with SMC in the South West region, providing vibrant, innovative, and rigorous theological education whilst also having its own South West flavour, responding to the particular missional contexts and opportunities of the South West.

James will work closely with the Dean to ensure the flourishing of the South West teaching centre and community within the national St Mellitus College. As Director James will work with local diocesan partners in the strategic development of the centre and how it best serves the ministry and mission in the local region and national Church.

Revd Russell Winfield (Dean of St Mellitus College) says:
I am delighted that James is returning to the SMC team as Director of SMC South West. James has proven experience of creating a vibrant yet rigorous place for students to study theology and is a pioneering and pastoral priest and leader. I am so pleased at James’ appointment and I have every confidence he will be an excellent Director for the centre and a wonderful contributor to our national life as a College.

James is currently Principal of St Paul's Theological College, Malaysia where he has been involved for the past five years having moved there with his family to be its founding Director. Prior to moving to Kuala Lumpur he was part of the St Mellitus College staff team as Tutor & Lecturer in Missiology. James holds a PhD on the Book of Revelation and an MProf in Practical Theology and is an ethnographer and contextual theologian with a track record in publication and as a conference speaker on a wide range of topics.  James is passionate about mission and contextual theology which is lived out by Christians in their local communities as well as a deep commitment to generous orthodoxy and diverse expressions of prayer and worship.

Revd Dr James Harding says:
“I am excited to be taking up the post as Director of St Mellitus College, South West. I am passionate about the deeply held values and distinctives of St Mellitus College and the missional significance of doing one’s theology in the local church context to which the student belongs. My hope is that as Director I will love, listen to, invest in, inspire and stretch those under my care in the South West, and grow the centre and the people within it into the next stage of mission and ministry that God is calling them to, in order to bring our best to local communities we serve.”

James will be returning to the UK with his wife and three children in the summer and will officially take up his post in the autumn.
